£300 FIXED PENALTY NOTICES TO BE
IMPLIMENTED BY THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY
     
 

From the 2nd April 2007 the Environment Agency will implement its powers to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for certain environmental offences under the Hazardous Waste regulations and enabled by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environmental Act 2005.

Concerns have been raised about potential toxic emissions from municipal incinerators, after it emerged that the Environment Agency has consented to them being used for Hazardous Wastes.

Operators of oil and fuel storage sites need to do more to protect the environment, according to the new report on the environmental standards.

The review looked at 86 sites across England and Wales. The findings show that at 22% of sites there was evidence that measures were significantly below a good level of practice.

A senior Defra official has spoken of the need for new financial instruments and targets to drive a “very substantial” increase in recycling within a new English waste strategy that will link waste recovery more clearly to reductions in carbon emissions.
