CONTROVERSY
AS MUNICIPAL INCINERATORS GET SET
TO BURN HAZARDOUS WASTE |
 |
| |
 |
|
| |
Concerns
have been raised about potential toxic emissions from municipal
incinerators, after it emerged that the Environment Agency has
consented to them being used for Hazardous Wastes. |

|
|
| |
Previously,
hazardous wastes had to be sent to dedicated high –temperature
hazardous waste incinerators, or to specially –engineered
hazardous waste landfill sites.
But now the E.A has told the government “In general ,
the agency see no policy barriers to municipal waste incinerators
accepting low risk hazardous waste” (Liz Parks, Environment
Agency)
The decision to allow “low risk” hazardous material
such as contaminated packaging, oil stained rags and chemically
treated wood at municipal incinerators has meet with Friends
of
the Earth warning of potential cocktail effect on emissions
in communities back yard.
