The
diagram below illustrates a bunded oil tank . It may be useful
for you to refer to it when designing you own bund.
· Locate
the store where it is unlikely to be damaged , e.g. away from
forklift trucks and other moving vehicles, incorporate crash
barriers where necessary.
· If
possible , do not store oil within 10 meters of a watercourse
or 50 meters of a well or borehole.
· Make
sure all oil containers (tanks, drums, intermediate bulk containers
etc) are on an impervious base.
· Surround
the base with an oil-tight bund wall.
· Guidance
on construction techniques for bund walls is available in the
CIRIA guidance documents for concrete and masonry bunds.
·
Make sure that if the container fails, all of
the oil will be held in the bund. This normally means the bund
should be able to contain at least 110% of the volume of the
tank, or 25% of the total volume if there is more than one tank.
· Any
Water that accumulates in the tank will reduce its holding capacity.
Consider whether it is practicable to roof the bunded area safely
to prevent the accumulation of rainwater.
· Do
not put any drains in the bund.
· Remove
any water from the bund by bailing or pumping via a manually
controlled system.

 |
You
are generally affected if you store more than 200 liters
of oil above ground in one or more containers at an industrial,
commercial or institutional site. |

 |
·
The water may be contaminated so dispose
of it as Hazardous Waste unless you are absolutely sure
that it is not Hazardous Waste. If it is not Hazardous
Waste you must still dispose of it in accordance with
Duty of Care obligations.
· Do
not put rain water that accumulates in bunds to drains,
unless you are specifically permitted to do so under your
trade effluent or Discharge consent.
· Enclose
all pipes, valves and gauges within the bund.
· Direct
the vent pipe downwards, and into the bund.
· Lock
off pipes and gauges, so that only authorized personnel
can access the oil.
· Supervise
deliveries so that you can make sure there is room in
the tank for the oil and that there are no leaks.
