UPDATE
New legislation from October 2007 your
Non–Hazardous waste such as general trade
waste must be treated before being land filled.

As previously reported in the *February issue these new rules mean that from the 30th October 2007 non-hazardous waste must be treated before it is disposed of at a landfill site and any liquid waste will be banned altogether from landfills.

This in essence means that your general waste must be sorted through a physical means or other process to help reduce its volume or nature and aid in the recovery. The waste producer is NOT the person obliged to treat the waste, however the landfill sites and trade waste collection companies will invariably end up passing the additional treatment costs on to you the customer.

As this has the potential to be a major change in the way you will have to operate and may cause disruption to your sites in terms of new containment delivery, service and storage problems. Therefore with this in mind we will be sending out a number of letters regarding the issues offering advice on how to best deal with the introduction of this bit of new legislation.

At this point the majority of the main trade waste service providers have offered recycling services. However the coverage of these service varies and not all sites may currently be covered with their current service provider. The trade waste service providers are still calculating costs for these recycling services in areas as potential uptake of all the customers is factored into their calculations.

In the mean time we will be sending out a simple survey to ascertain your waste requirements by establishing by percentage what type of waste is disposed of in your trade waste bin.

Once the information regarding costs and capability have been ascertained and sent to us we will of course be forwarding this information to you by letter with a reply form which will allow us to place the instructions to the trade waste provider or other service provider.

** It should be noted that although you may end up with an additional bin on site your general waste bin size or collection frequency may be reduced overtime in order to compensate for the waste moved to the new recycling bin.
