ENVIRONMENT AGENCY CALLS FOR
TOUGHER PENALTIES

The environment agency and senior politicians have called for tougher penalties for waste crimes—as the cost of dealing with illegal dumping soars to £100 million a year.

Agency chief executive Baroness Barbara Young was pleading for more powers to put waste criminals behind bars at a recent meeting. Although the agency is making progress in shutting down illegally operated waste sites, the rising costs and forthcoming new English waste strategy will still see companies and individuals looking to profit by dealing with waste irresponsibly.

Baroness Young said “ We need penalties to be more flexible, faster and more furious when applied. Those who make megabucks out of environmental crime, we want to see them in prison”. With 1 million fly tipping incidents now being recorded each year it is not surprising that the average fines for 2005/2006 of £2300 per offence has been seen as woefully inadequate as detriment capable of halting the criminals.
