THE WASTE INCINERATION DIRECTIVE,
HOW DOES IT AFFECT YOU?

The Waste Incineration Directive (WID) is a European law which aims to prevent, or limit as far as practicable, negative effects on the environment from the incineration and co-incineration of waste. The Directive applies to most activities that involve the burning of waste, whether for disposal or when used as fuel.

The Waste Incineration Directive was implemented in the UK in 2002 and 2003, by separate regulations for England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, in conjunction with the Pollution Prevention and Control regime. These regulations introduced strict regulatory controls and minimum technical standards for waste incinerators and co-incinerators. Note that other legal controls may also apply if you burn waste.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS

The change in the environmental standards has resulted in the majority of outlets for waste oil in the UK being unable to deal with the material as a source of fuel anymore. This has had the effect that one site Corus Steel at Redcar now handles the majority of the waste oil produced.

This has resulted in huge increase in logistics costs as oil collected in the South now has to travel to the North East before it can be recycled/disposed off . Moreover it has resulted in the price paid to the oil collectors being reduced to such an extent that Waste oil collections now cost as much as £50-£70 on average. Credential Automotive of course has endeavoured to keep their costs as low as possible and still manages to have a lower price for the collection of waste oil than many of their competitors.

However it should be noted that the days of being paid for waste oil have therefore long since faded and that the oil collection vehicle can no longer be relied on to arrive on a scheduled service. As the oil collectors now try to minimise their logistics costs and squeeze more revenue out of their services.
