1998 915,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment
waste was created and this volume is rising between 3-5% per
annum. The regulation came into force on 2nd January 2007
and producers of WEEE had to join a compliance scheme by 15th
March 2007.
WEEE is the fastest growing waste stream in the UK. The WEEE
directive has been introduced in order to reduce the amount
of this waste going to land fill and increase Recycling.
Do the WEEE regulations apply to your company?
If
your company has any of the 10 following categories of electrical
equipment, then you must follow the WEEE Regulations.
Large household appliances, small household appliances, IT
and Telecommunications equipment, consumer equipment, lighting
equipment, electrical and electronic tools, toys, leisure
and sports equipment, medical devices, monitoring and control
equipment, automatic dispensers.
WEEE products are broke up into 2 categories, Historic and
Future. In order to work out which category your electrical
equipment falls into you need to find out the date the product
was place on the market.
Placed on the market before 13th August 2005 – Historic
Placed on the market after 13th August 2005 – Future
Timetable
for Implementation and Compliance
WEEE regulations placed obligations on producers and distributors
of EEE from 1st July 2007. The first WEEE compliance period
ran from 1st July 2007 to 31st December 2007. Each subsequent
period runs annually from 1st January.
